Who Can Join?

Eligibility Requirements

Any male, regardless of race, creed, or national origin, shall be eligible for membership who is a citizen of good repute in the community, is at least 18 years of age, and is descended from one or more patriots who either:

  • Served in the military forces or provided aid to achieve American independence
    • Continental Army or Navy
    • State militia or navy
    • Privateers
    • French forces fighting in America
  • Signed an oath of allegiance or the Articles of Association
  • Provided material aid to the cause of independence
  • Served in the Continental Congress or a state legislature
  • Held a civil office during the Revolutionary period

What is a Patriot?

A patriot is defined as one who provided service or direct assistance in achieving American Independence during the period of the American Revolution between April 19, 1775 (the battles of Lexington and Concord) and November 26, 1783 (British evacuation of New York City).

How to Join

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Research your family history to identify a Revolutionary War patriot ancestor. Use our genealogical resources to help with your research.

Step 2: Prepare Your Application

Complete the SAR membership application with documentation proving your lineage from your patriot ancestor. You'll need:

  • Birth certificates for each generation
  • Marriage certificates
  • Death certificates or obituaries
  • Documentation of your patriot ancestor's service

Step 3: Submit Your Application

Contact your local chapter or the Maryland Society to submit your application. Our genealogists will review your documentation and assist with any questions.

Types of Membership

Regular Membership

For men 18 years and older who can prove lineal descent from a Revolutionary War patriot.

Junior Membership

For young men ages 12-18 who qualify by lineage. A great way to involve the next generation!

Dual Membership

Already a member of another state society? Join Maryland SAR as a dual member to participate in our activities.
